Frequently Asked Questions
What is CFGC?
CFGC stands for “Collegiate Fighting Game Conference,” and we’re here to bring the competitive vibe and support seen with other collegiate esports titles into the realm of fighting games. A lot of schools have competitive Smash scenes, but we want to spread the love to other games, too. We’re a group of fighting game fanatics that want to bring in and bring up the next gen of fighting game competitors. We want to give you the support you need to take steps into high-level competition!
Wait...Do I need to be a pro?
Not at all! CFGC is here to support players at all levels of play. Everyone starts at the same level, and matches leading up to the end of the semester will change as you win or lose in the regular season. If you’re new to fighting games, we know that it might be scary at first. The good news is that we’re here for everyone! No shame in being new.
Can I play ANY FIGHTING GAME in CFGC?
Right now, the titles we support are:
Street Fighter 6
Mortal Kombat 1
Tekken 8
Guilty Gear: Strive
As new games release and community wants change, we’ll make sure to look out for other titles to include. Have a request? Reach out to info@cfgc.gg , and we’ll be sure to get back to you ASAP.
Okay, but like, where do I start?
If you want to play in the CFGC, there are a few criteria:
You MUST be a college student. No excuses.
You must currently be enrolled to your college/university. If not, you are ineligible. We do ask for every competitor to submit their current/upcoming schedule as proof they are currently a student.
To sign up, there will be a form every competitor will have to fill out, along with paying your competitor fee.
What’s the cost?
To support our growing CFGC community, we’ve introduced a $50 Competitor Fee. This fee helps fund prize pools, casting talent, community initiatives, and other essentials, so everyone benefits from a stronger, more vibrant community. If you are paying for multiple students in one group, please contact info@cfgc.gg . Also, if you are signing up 9 or more students in a group, the cost will ONLY be $400. No more.
How much time will this take?
Going forward, participation in CFGC will require about two hours per week. We’ll be enforcing our updated rules—complete with clearly defined DQ procedures, graduated penalty tiers, and an appeals process—to promote fair play, uphold standards, and ensure our vibrant community continues to thrive.
The tournament format is…?
For everyone new
Think of CFGC’s format like competitive chess: everyone starts at a base of 1000 ELO points. You’ll be placed into Round-Robin pools of 3–4 players at or above your ELO, and each match is a full Best-of-5 set (you play all five games, win or lose). After each set, you’ll receive one of three possible scores: 5-0, 4-1, or 3-2, and earn ELO accordingly: the more games you win, the bigger your point gain, and defeating higher-ELO opponents nets you an extra boost. This structure ensures balanced pools, rewards consistency, and keeps skill progression clear and fair for everyone.
For returning players
Your ELO rating carries over from last season, so you’ll immediately face opponents at—or above—your skill level, ensuring competitive matches from the get-go. Don’t worry; this carryover won’t impact playoff eligibility. Every player still has an equal shot at the postseason based solely on pool performance.
